The Ecommerce in Indonesia is a promising industry, owing to the country’s large population, which is the fourth largest in the world. The industry is also gaining momentum, due to the increasing number of internet users in the country, which has been growing year on year.

The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) reported that over 215 million people in Indonesia used the internet in 2022. This accounts for roughly 78.19% of the population. The growing number of mobile phone users in Indonesia has also increased accessibility to e-commerce platforms, leading to a surge in e-commerce visitors.

These factors are driving the growth of e-commerce traffic. By 2022, the number of visits to e-commerce platforms reached 178.94 million and are forecasted to rise to 196.47 million this year.

The list of the most popular e-commerce platforms in Indonesia remains unchanged from the previous year. Based on Similarweb data, Shopee remains the most visited e-commerce platform in Indonesia in 2023 for marketplace category.

Shopee is firmly in the lead, surpassing Tokopedia.

In the first quarter (Q1), Shopee recorded 158 million visits, while in the second quarter (Q2), the platform recorded 167 million visits. Shopee achieved a significant increase in visits in Q3, reaching 216.8 million visits. The growth in visits surpassed even that of the 4th quarter of 2022, which had reached 191.6 million visits.

Meanwhile, Shopee’s main rival, Tokopedia, performed less satisfactorily and continued to show a downward trend in visits until Q3. In Q1, it recorded 117 million visits, which slumped to 107.2 million in Q2, and persisted in declining to below 100 million (97.1 million) in Q3.

Lazada Ranks Third on the List of Top 5 Ecommerce Platforms in Indonesia

From the data on ecommerce in Indonesia above, Lazada holds the third spot with 83.2 million visitors in the first quarter of 2023. In Q2, the number of visits to the Lazada platform declined to 74.5 million.

In the third quarter, Lazada recorded 52.2 million visits or it lost over 30 million visits from the first quarter.

Bukalapak, ranked fifth, has undergone a significant decrease since Q4 of the previous year. In Q4 2022, Bukalapak had a total of 19.7 million visitors, but in Q1 2023 the numbers dropped to 18.1 million. This decline continued during Q2, with Bukalapak recording 15.6 million visits and decreased further in Q3 to 12.4 million.
